50th ANNIVERSARY - BAG ROOM OPEN

In recognition of this 50th Anniversary milestone, We are absolutely delighted to host Clayton Gregory (returning for the third time), Louis Fiumara (Ocean Reef golf pro) and Brette Bryant (Card Sound golf pro), all participants of the Bag Room Open, at the 35th Annual Legends Invitational in Pebble Beach in November.  

History of the Bag Room Open

The tournament began in 1977 after Ocean Reef golf professionals debated who was the best professional “on The Reef.” Members encouraged them to settle the question competitively.

Ocean Reef homeowners Ed Aborn and Chick Harbert helped turn the informal challenge into an organized tournament and generated member interest. Harbert—winner of the 1954 PGA Championship and a member of the PGA Hall of Fame—reportedly followed matches in his cart with a rule book and served as referee.

Dan Fabian, then 22 and in his final season at Ocean Reef, became the first official champion. About 20–30 golf carts reportedly followed the inaugural final; modern galleries have exceeded 100 carts.

The competition grew to include professional golf staff from both Ocean Reef Club and Card Sound Golf Club. It is traditionally played as a match-play bracket, with members following the players in golf carts.

A major part of the event is the Golf Mentor Program, founded by the late Stan Ellis. Members are paired with golf-staff mentees to support their professional development, and mentors serve as their caddies during the tournament.

Member donations fund the event. The proceeds are divided among the golf staffs as an end-of-season expression of appreciation, with additional awards or bonuses associated with advancing, birdies and eagles.

Jimmy Watson served as the tournament’s colorful commentator for more than 20 years. He initially announced player backgrounds during the final rounds and later expanded his commentary throughout the competition.

Jack Nicklaus attended or participated in the 1982 Bag Room Open—the Club’s historical article includes a photograph of him at that year’s event.

The tournament celebrated its 50th edition in 2026.  That year also introduced the JJ Award, honoring a longtime Outside Services associate remembered for embodying the friendship and mutual respect between members and employees.

In short, the Bag Room Open evolved from an internal contest to identify Ocean Reef’s best golf professional into a major member-associate tradition centered on competition, mentoring and appreciation for the golf staffs.
